Well, it looks like it’s time to put a lid on April and welcome May, but it’s been a great month here at The Socratic Salon. It’s exciting to see so many people enthusiastic about reading and discussing the same book, even if we don’t all agree. Our whole mission in creating this space was to encourage dialogue, so we love to see those falling threads in Disqus, especially if they start without our involvement. We definitely want to join in on the talk, but don’t want to overpower it—we say plenty in the post, don’t you think? Help keep the discussion going: If a particular comment inspires you to respond, by all means respond to that comment! We love to see additional questions and ideas posed in new threads, too. Think of this as your space as much as it is ours.

If you missed our updates on Facebook or Twitter, we’ve set up a Goodreads group to help us all connect, make it easy to see what’s on our bookshelf, and create an additional place for you to make book suggestions. It’s already hopping and you’ve tossed some wonderful ideas our way. Plus, we love checking out how everyone in the group has rated the books we’re discussing—such wide ranging opinions! It’s been great to see so many of you already diving into May’s picks. Here’s what we have lined up:

May 6th – Citizen by Claudia Rankine

May 13th – A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

May 20th – The Dinner by Herman Koch

May 27th – Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

We’ll be welcoming several guests to our discussions this month. Vasilly from 1330v will be joining us for Citizen, Marisa from The Daily Dosage will be taking part in A Little Life and Sarah from Sarah’s Bookshelves will hop in on The Dinner. If there’s an upcoming discussion you’d like to be a guest for, just let us know!

Help us choose what to discuss in June and beyond! If you don’t see something you love here, you can always drop us a line in the Suggestion Box.
